Position Information:
Reporting to the Skilled Crafts Trades Supervisor in the Facilities Services Maintenance Department, the Lead Sheet Metal Welder performs journey-level work related to the fabrication, assembly, installation and repair of sheet metal products and equipment. Oversees critical day-to-day operations in supervisor's absence and acts as subject matter expert who provides leadership to team members. Operates and trains others on fabricating machines, equipment, methods and materials used in performing various welding operations. Performs project estimating of time, labor and materials, places orders, and receives materials for all projects. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing, and corrective/preventative maintenance performed. Reviews and updates all shop logs (paper and electronic) according to all changes. Reviews and creates blueprints/drawings and specifications for new construction and retrofit/renovation projects according to building code requirements. Responds to emergency situations during or after hours to mitigate and/or resolve immediate concerns and correct safety issues. Performs all job duties in adherence with University and departmental safety guidelines. Maintains a positive attitude for the team and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

The full salary range for the Sheet Medal Worker is $44.91 - $50.56 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.

High School Diploma.

Experience Requirements

Seven years of journey-level experience in welding or metal fabrication, and/or completion of a certified apprenticeship training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Experience performing welding techniques and using welding tools and equipment.

1 year of experience leading, guiding, and/or supervising a team.

Experience and ability to prioritize work orders, routine work, emergency requests and ability to choose the proper materials or equipment to accomplish work in the most expeditious and safe manner.

Ability to record information accurately as is necessary to perform the job responsibilities.

Willingness and ability to work weekends and holidays, occasional scheduled and unscheduled overtime, emergency call-back, and a flexible schedule as needed.

Knowledge of common industrial safety standards, procedures, and applicable building codes. Familiar with proper handling of asbestos, mold, and lead paint. Ability to communicate and understand safety regulations and potential hazards.

Ability to read, write and perform basic arithmetic calculations. Skill in proper application of precision measuring and calibration equipment.

Ability to estimate time, methods, and materials needed from construction documents. Ability to read and understanding documents such as complex technical procedures, work instructions, blue prints, plans, manuals, specifications, diagrams, and follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to communicate and work effectively with co-workers, supervisors, the general public, and provide exceptional customer service.

Ability to work from ladders, scaffolds, man-lifts, and boom trucks or stages at varying heights of up to 25 feet above grade; ability to lift up to 75 pounds. Ability to preform repetitive loading, pushing, pulling, carry, move and manipulate various building materials.

Ability to work around and be exposed to unpleasant smells and possible dangerous hazardous substances.

Knowledge of installation, maintenance, operation, and inspection related to welding or sheet metal fabrication.

Knowledge in various welding techniques such as: shielded metal arc welding, gas tungsten arc welding, gas metal arc welding, flux-cored arc welding, and/or electroslag welding.

Knowledge in cutting, bending, assembling of various metals; experience with breaks, shears, threaders, bending, forging, forming and machining.

Preferred Qualifications

Basic knowledge and technical skills with computer programs and applications (i.e. Microsoft Word, Excel, Design Cad 2, etc.).

Knowledge of UC/UCR policies and systems.

The Lead Sheet Medal Welder is responsible for operating and training others on: equipment, methods, materials used to perform various welding projects throughout the University of California, Riverside campus. This position may work independently or as part of a team and responds to emergency situations during or after hours to mitigate and/or resolve immediate concerns and correct safety issues. Maintains a positive attitude for the team and communicates effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students.

Key Responsibilities:

Sheetmetal/Welding Fabrication:

Fabricates, assembles, and repairs sheet metal products and equipment. Including the installation of prefabricated sheet metal ducts used for: heating and ventilating systems, alarms, plumbing, electrical panels, etc. per project specifications.

Welds parts to form complete units or subunits while following blueprints and layout specifications with the appropriate use of trade tools.

Fabricates metal products such as: framework, HVAC components, environmental systems, and specified parts for projects according to job order, verbal instructions, and/or blue prints.

Sheetmetal/Welding Maintenance:

Develops shop drawings for the design and manufacturing of sheet metal products. Selects gauges and types of sheet metal or nonmetallic material according to product specifications. Develops patterns that use materials most efficiently using computerized metal working equipment.

Develops sequential plans of operations accounting for material thickness, welding shrinkage, and physical properties of metal. Arranges and ensures the welded parts are in order before assembled into final product.

Sets up and operates fabricating machines, soldering, and welding equipment to form and assemble metal components. Performs routine maintenance work on all machines and equipment to ensure they are operating at full capacity.

Performs all work following appropriate safety procedures such as: transporting materials, hauling, loading, lifting, operating power tools, digging (trenches), excavating, etc. in preparation of the project.

Communication & Customer Service:

Serves as liaison with clients, relaying their needs and requirements to the appropriate department or supervisor. Maintains a positive attitude and communicates effectively with colleagues, staff, faculty, and students.

Communicates and reports any issues not limited to potential safety hazards (e.g. broken glass, regulated materials, damaged steps, excess water, fire, etc.), or any liabilities during the day-to-day operations.

Oversees scheduled and/or emergency repairs. Responds to customer complaints and requests for information. Works with customer and campus personnel to accurately define the nature of the problem, determine the appropriate course of action, make recommendations, and follow up to ensure resolution has been effective.

Lead Sheetmetal/Welder Responsibilities:

Leads, guides, clarifies instructions, and acts as a subject matter expert.

Makes recommendations on staff, equipment, materials and other sources of cost savings and efficiency improvements. Trains new team members on campus systems, procedures, and methods.

Establishes and maintains a high level of professionalism that supports collaboration and problem solving while building strong working relationships with customers, colleagues, contractors, and campus partners.

Performs job walks, provides scope work, develops estimates for labor and material, removals, isometrics drawings, and plans in accordance with appropriate code requirements.

Oversees the maintenance of tools and equipment. Ensures the safe operation of equipment and that all members are following safety procedures correctly.

Provides administrative support by processing work order requests and prepares written documentation in a clear and concise manner. Submits purchase requests through the eBuy system.

May oversee work performed by contractors to ensure compliance with campus procedures and safety guidelines.

Shop Support:

Performs computer input of keeping record of labor and materials used in work performed. Maintains clear and accurate documentation of all inspections, testing, and maintenance performed. Updates equipment documentation and specifications as needed.

Cleans shop and vehicle to ensure organization. Accounts for shop parts, supplies, inventory, and places orders when restock is necessary.

Interprets prints, schematics, wiring diagrams, flow charts and written descriptions of functions and project requirements. Consults with supervisor when needed.

Supports maintenance projects and programmatic work assignments. Adheres to the scheduling and completion of work assignments through the work order system.

Participates in safety and other trainings as required. Performs all job duties in adherence to all University and Departmental safety guidelines.
