Function of Job Under direction of the Assistant Superintendent, Business Services, to plan, organize and supervise the maintenance, operations and transportation services and interface with the capital facilities team of the school district.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities • Supervises the Maintenance, Operations and Transportation Departments. • Supervises and evaluates the work of the maintenance, operations and transportation personnel including all disciplinary functions mandated by district policies and practices. • Confers with and directs maintenance, operations and transportation personnel regarding methods and procedures of work, supply and equipment requirements, and operational problems and conflicts. • Confers with school administrators regarding the care and cleanliness of buildings and grounds, and operation of transportation services. • Trains, inspects and checks for proper utilization of time, materials and equipment in the performance of maintenance, operations and transportation duties. • Plans, implements and directs the district preventive maintenance program. • Advises on and approves work requisitions. • Participates in the planning of capital facilities projects with consultants, contractors, inspectors, architects and other members of the facilities team. • Acts as liaison between the M&O department, school sites and the capital facilities projects team. • Reviews requests for alterations, remodeling and other work to be done. • Reviews, coordinates and recommends all construction related consulting services, contractors, sub-contractors and contract agreements. • Makes and reviews cost estimates on construction and repair work. • Coordinates special events operations requiring preparation of facilities and scheduling of transportation equipment. • Reviews and approves recommendations for employment, transfer and promotion of personnel. • Develops and supervises in-service training programs. • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Acceptable Qualifications Knowledge of: • Methods, practices, equipment and supplies used in building maintenance, groundskeeping, custodial and school transportation services. • Training in organization, management, supervision or advanced programs in one or more of the building and maintenance trades. • Principles and practices of employee supervision including selection, training, work evaluation and discipline. • Safe working methods and procedures related to the trades supervised. Working knowledge of: • The applicable building codes, safety codes and environmental laws relating to school construction and maintenance. • Cal OSHA and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Ability to: • Prepare and interpret plans and specifications. • Direct the work of others effectively. • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted during the course of work
Education and Experience Education: • High school diploma or equivalent. • Bachelor’s Degree preferred. Experience: • Ten years of increasingly responsible experience in maintenance of building and equipment, including five years in a supervisory capacity and/or five years education school environment in the above areas with at least two of the five in direct supervision of 10 or more personnel. • At least three years of experience interacting with capital facilities programs that included interaction with consultants, contractors, architects, inspectors and other members of the capital facilities projects team. Working Conditions • Typical office environment: attractive, pleasant physical setting. • Must drive from school to school to observe operations. Physical Demands - The physical requirements indicated below are examples of the physical aspects that this position classification must perform to carry out the essential job functions. • Persons performing duties in this position classification will exert a minimum of 50 pounds of force and occasionally up to 75 pounds of force to lift, push, pull, carry or otherwise move objects. • This type of work may involve ascending and descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding and ramps and will involve walking or standing for extended periods. • Perceiving the nature of sound, near and far vision, depth perception, providing oral information, the manual dexterity to operate equipment and use hand tools, and handle and work with various materials and objects are important aspects of this job classification. • Exposure to hot, cold, wet, humid or windy conditions caused by weather will often be experienced. • Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable a person with a disability to perform the essential functions of the job.
