Provides instruction and conducts training to transfer working knowledge and understanding of commercial driving licensure requirements. Primary duties are teaching and assisting leadership in coordinating the commercial driving license (CDL) program area for the YSU Driving School. Responsible for curriculum design, delivery, and administration of non-credit coursework.Essential Functions and Responsibilities: Provides in-person classroom and/or online/synchronous instructional services, maintains a safe working area and conditions, and prepares and assists students in earning their CDL A or B with appropriate endorsements. Trains students to prepare and take the CDL Class-A or Class-B permit test, pre-trip skills test, basic controls skills test, the road/driving skills test and any related tests required for a CDL.
Instructs students using curriculum approved for YSU Driving School by the Ohio Department of Public Safety; prepares and reviews lesson plans and provides class instruction; grades and electronically records assignments; actively promotes student retention; supports externship activities as applicable, and performs related work as required.
Assists with development of course outcomes and curriculum which are consistent with university policies and procedures as well as department and program goals.
Conveys course outcomes and expectations to students according to college policy.
Advises and assists current and prospective students regarding interpretation of placement assessment, ascertainment of desired career and academic goals, development of an academic plan, establishment of program requirements related to academic objectives, and course scheduling and registration.
Maintains student files, records and data in accordance with federal, state and university regulations.
Other Functions and Responsibilities: Assists with training new hires.
Performs other duties as assigned and/or required that are within the level of responsibility for this classification at the discretion of the supervisor.
Equipment Operated: Computer and all other standard office equipment.
Work Schedule: Typically, Monday through Friday. Occasional evening and weekend hours.
Supervision Exercised: May exercise supervision over student employees.
Reports to: Program Director, YSU Driving School
Required Certifications, Training, and/or Licensures: Valid commercial driver's license (CDL Class-A); Ohio Department of Public Safety Class-A Instructor Training License or must be attained within 6 months of hire; and maintains all necessary training to stay within state mandated licensure rules and regulations for Ohio; a current Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card; and clean DOT drug test upon hire and on an ongoing basis.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of: University policies and procedures*; Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO) regulations; proper methods to maintain vehicles and equipment; office practices and procedures; department/division goals and objectives*; department/division policies and procedures*; workplace safety practices and procedures*; English grammar and spelling; records management; office management; project management.
Skill in: Teaching methodologies for adults; use of office equipment; typing, data entry; computer operation; use of computer software and other programs applicable to the assigned department/division*.
Ability to: use a variety of instructional strategies to support and motivate students; execute pre-trip inspection, air-brake test and CDL driving essentials (i.e. straight line backing, 90-degree ally docking, parallel parking sight side and blind side); instruct shifting patterns; collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; determine material and equipment needs; compile and prepare reports; use proper research methods to gather data; understand a variety of written and/or verbal communications; maintain records according to established procedures; effectively interact with personnel and public to answer routine questions; train or instruct others; move quickly and effectively from one tasks to another; work independently and in a team environment; develop and maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Qualifications: At least a high school diploma or GED; two or more years of teaching experience in the specialty field or subject area; three or more years of truck driving experience within the last five years; a valid commercial driver's license (CDL Class-A); clean MVR and FBI/BCI background checks; and clean DOT drug test upon hire and on an ongoing basis.
Preferred Qualifications: Ohio Public Safety Instructor License.Current Department of Transportation (DOT) medical card. Professional development in the field of concentration as demonstrated by activity in professional associations or consultative practice. Participation in seminars, workshops, and formal coursework, or individual reading and research.
