Position Overview:
Dexter Southfield seeks a Boys' Varsity Soccer Head Coach to oversee all aspects of team and player development, game strategy, and program leadership and to serve as a role model for our student-athletes. Responsibilities include teaching skills and techniques, planning and leading practices, and motivating players to develop as individuals and collectively as a team. This role requires the coach to develop strategies, maintain records, and build a team of confident, successful student-athletes.
Essential Job Functions:
Develop and implement a comprehensive soccer program that emphasizes skill development, teamwork, and sportsmanship in a highly competitive NEPSAC environment
Develop overall sports strategy to mentor players, develop training programs and drills, and promote sportsmanship among student-athletes
Instruct athletes in individual and team fundamentals, strategies, and physical conditioning
Foster a positive and inclusive team culture built on respect that encourages growth, discipline, and leadership
Working in conjunction with the Admissions and Athletic Director to develop a strategy to recruit and retain top talent, including evaluating, visiting, and recommending prospective student-athletes
Speak to college coaches to support athletes in their recruitment process
Scout and assess opponents to develop effective game strategies
Support athletes in their pursuit of collegiate athletics, if applicable
Work collaboratively with the Athletic Director and School leadership to uphold the mission and values of the School’s athletic program
Manage game-day operations, including lineup decisions and in-game coaching
Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, and School administration
Provide auxiliary soccer programming in the off-season to attract potential new players
Oversee the development and success of the Varsity B and middle school programs
Maintain equipment and facilities
Work with academic faculty to monitor athletes' academic progress
Accurate and timely record-keeping, documentation, and follow up
Transport student-athletes to/from competitions, practices, and off-site events
Attend and represent the School at special coaches’ events
Team travel and planning (including overnights) are required for pre-season training, throughout the season, and for pre- and post-season scrimmages, tournaments, and recruitment efforts
Other duties as assigned
Skills and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or equivalent academic credentials required
Proficiency in soccer skills training and team tactics
Two or three years of independent school or collegiate-level coaching experience required
Understanding of NEPSAC regulations and thorough knowledge of recruiting and NCAA rules
Expertise in the assigned sport to lead a competitive program
Maintain a current driver’s license and clean driving record
Demonstrate knowledge, strategy, and leadership principles of the designated sport
Effective communication, organizational, and team management skills
Maintain current CPR/AED/First Aid certification required
Understanding of the academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of student-athletes
Ability to work as a team player and individual contributor
Commitment to actively promote and contribute to an engaging and inclusive workplace
Ability to be flexible, manage stress effectively, and adapt to changing work priorities in a fast-paced work environment
Requirements:
This job requires one to lift, carry, push, and/or pull equipment and/or materials weighing up to 20 pounds as well as the ability to run, bend, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and/or crawl. The person in this position is required to move frequently and swiftly, including ascending and descending stairs. This job typically requires 10% sitting, 40% walking, and 50% standing and is typically performed at room temperature in a generally hazard-free environment. The role will require the incumbent to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and school breaks.
Dexter Southfield’s 36-acre campus is composed of several buildings and outdoor learning spaces, which are accessible via internal and external walkways, stairs, nature paths, hills, and uneven terrain. This position requires one to transfer between these areas in all weather conditions.
