Job Summary: | Join the University Housing Facilities Team as a Steamfitter! Under the general supervision of the Housing Trades Supervisor, the Steamfitter position duties include but are not limited to: maintenance, repair, installation and alteration of a variety of HVAC equipment and systems, including steam, hydraulic, ventilation, and refrigeration systems in the Dining and Residence Halls on the UW-Madison campus.
Work with a team of professionals focused on excellent customer service with no sales component. Base hours will have a flexible start time: primary schedule is Monday - Friday with hours between 7:00am and 5:30pm with a rotating weekend schedule.

Responsibilities: | Lays out, installs, remodels, and maintains pipe systems for heating/chilling water hydraulic and pneumatic equipment, and steam systems within power houses, distribution systems and buildings to ensure adequate, safe, and operable institutional facilities. - 10% Interprets blueprints and drawings to assess and verify specifications and to calculate the materials and equipment required. Discusses project plan with customer/client
- 10% Gathers materials, prepares work area, and maintains equipment and supplies needed for jobs
- 20% Performs skilled steamfitter work according to established trade standards and applicable building and safety codes
- 10% Reviews finished projects with client/customer. Maintains records and reports of work status and completion according to established deadlines and expectations
- 5% Cleans work area upon completion of projects according to established guidelines and expectations
- 10% Collaborates with and assists contractors as needed
- 35% Installs, troubleshoots, and services Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVACR) systems and equipment

Tasks: | - Communicates in English via radio and in person to emergency personnel.
- Performs Steamfitter work in a variety of University Housing buildings, including driving vehicles to efficiently transport staff, move supplies, and urgently respond to emergency situations.
- Performs duties in a highly diverse student and family housing community, including resident occupied spaces, as well as in vacant and common areas.
- Provides support and assistance as needed in the implementation of plans and procedures in the event of an emergency.

Qualifications: | Required: Completion of a registered apprenticeship program approved by the Department of Workforce Development as a Steamfitter, as defined on DWD website - https://dwd.wisconsin.gov/apprenticeship/trades/steamfitter-construction.htm
Preferred: Related experience in a multi-family, hospital, university housing, or similar industrial environment |
License/Certification: | Required Drivers License - Valid and Meets UW Risk Management Standards
Preferred EPA Refrigerant Handling Certification |
Work Schedule: | Flexible start time: primary schedule is Monday - Friday with hours between 7:00am and 5:30pm with weekend rotation as required by the department. Schedule will be determined upon hire.
Schedule alterations as operations and position expectations demand. |
