Specific Duties & Responsibilities

Obtain and concisely record an accurate patient history.

• Chief complaint
• Past ocular, medical, family and social history
• iMedications and allergies

Basic skills

• Accurately measure and record visual acuity.
• Accurately perform and record contrast sensitivity and Ishihara or HRR color vision testing.
• Accurately measure and record current lens power with a manual lensometer.
• Perform and record ancillary testing such as exophthalmometry, Amsler grid, or Schirmer testing.
• Evaluate pupillary reactions, including afferent pupillary defect.
• Estimate anterior chamber depth.
• Properly operate common non-automated and automated ophthalmic equipment.

Patient services

• Properly assist physically or visually disabled patients.
• Apply proper ocular dressings and shields.
• Follow divisional protocols for eye drop instillation, including cycloplegics and topical anesthetics.

Basic Tonometry

• Perform accurate applanation tonometry using the Goldmann or Tonopen tonometer.
• Perform accurate iCare tonometry.
• Understand the principals of scleral rigidity and the factors that alter intraocular pressure.

Instrument Maintenance

• Perform routine instrument maintenance on all ophthalmic equipment.
• Stock examination rooms in assigned area and ensure medication expiration dates are current.
• Disinfect and maintain examination rooms.
• Proficient in software such as Epic and Forum.
  

General Medical Knowledge

• Maintain current CPR certification

Additional Duties include

• Regularly checks Wilmer?s procedure room to ensure that everything therein is compliant with Johns Hopkins Hospital Epidemiology and Infection Control requirements as well as requirements of the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the Joint Commission.
• Ensures all instrumentation is properly cleaned, sterilized, stored, and ready for use.
• Works with insurance companies, who often withhold approval, to provide documentation demonstrating the medical necessity of treatment, surgery, and/or medication/s for patients.
• Ensures in-basket messages from patients directed to any of Wilmer?s Oculoplastics locations are reviewed, addressed and acted on timely.
• Triages in-basket messages and escalates those that require physician attention and involvement.
• Implements, measures and adjusts improvement initiatives.
• Serves as the primary resource for questions/issues of staff and patients.
• Orients new physicians, fellows and residents to clinic processes.
• Manages clinic inventory and orders medications, instruments and supplies as needed.
• Ensures all dated items are reviewed and expiration times are never exceeded.
• Continuously monitors patient flow and intervenes to mitigate backups.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 50% of the time.
• Ability to move about to escort patients to the exam rooms and different departments, gather and replace supplies, and stock rooms.
  
• Constantly positions self to adjust ophthalmic equipment in order to perform exams.
  
• Ability to manipulate extremely small objects.
  
• The person in this position frequently communicates with patients. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  
• Ability to safely utilize various types of Ophthalmic Equipment to directly contact the patient?s eye.
  
• Occasionally lifts and transports supplies up to 20 lbs.
  
• Ability to concentrate on instruments and other visual stimuli.
  
• Observation of and rapid reaction to changeable situations.

• High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
• One year experience as an Ophthalmic Technician.
• Must obtain Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) from JCAHPO within 18 months of start date.
• CPR certification required.

• Familiarity with ophthalmic and general medical terminology.
• Mathematics: able to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, fractions, decimals, addition and subtraction of positive and negative numbers.
• Language: able to comprehend simple instructions and short correspondence. Able to write simple correspondence. Able to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to patients and other employees.
• Reasoning: able to comprehend and execute instructions. Able to manage situations with more than one variable.
• Observe and respond rapidly to changeable situations.
