Reporting to the Operations Director - ISEC and EXP, the Associate Director - Lab Operations, responsible for daily management of ISEC and EXP shared labs and core facilities, and supports the Operations Director needs of ISEC and EXP. The Associate Director duties includes laboratory operations, student office spaces, and the related collaborative spaces and scientific equipment needed to support the research in ISEC and EXP. The Associate Director assists with activities associated with core research facilities in ISEC and EXP; facilitates certification and maintenance of core facilities equipment; assists PIs and departments with training for personnel seeking access to core research support facilities.
The Associate Director works closely with the with colleges, the Office of Academic and Research Safety (OARS) and Northeastern Planning, Real Estate, and Facilities (PREF) to assist PIs and departments ensuring laboratory and core facilities meet safety and regulatory standards; and assist with maintaining laboratory and core facility spaces assignments; works with service technicians for scheduling of maintenance and repairs. The Associate Director also maintains and analyzes updated space data to support university decision making.
Cooperate with college faculty, staff, OARS, and PREF teams, and institutional safety groups to plan and renovate specific spaces; attends regular ISEC and EXP renovations meetings; monitors ISEC and EXP projects progress and make sure those projects are completed in a timely manner; coordinates labs move from/to ISEC and EXP. Communicate daily ISEC and EXP lab renovation and construction issues with the colleges and PREF; regularly assess the space needs for ISEC and EXP faculty.
Qualifications:
Both a Master's degree and 5-7 years of experience in lab operations and project management are required, with preference experience in scientific, academic shared laboratory setting and core lab facilities managements. Familiarity with research lab mechanical systems and operations preferred. Highly effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills are required together with excellent computer skills including Windows, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook). Ability to work well with others, strong organizational skills, decision making, and a problem-solving mindset required. Knowledge of, and experience with, the culture of research and administrative systems of Northeastern University strongly preferred.
Job Duties: Overall ISEC/EXP Support for Research Operations: Provides logistic support for laboratory operations. Works with academic units to maintain appropriate operational safety equipment such as biosafety cabinets and autoclaves; acts as liaison between PIs of different academic units and clusters. Manage procurement of core autoclaves and facilities supplies and consumables as needed. Maintains and analyzes updated lab and students' spaces data to support university decision making. (25%)
ISEC/EXP Core Facility Support and Administration: Assists with activities associated with core research facilities in ISEC and EXP; facilitates certification and maintenance of core facilities equipment; assists PIs and departments with training for personnel seeking access to core research support facilities. Assists core directors and personnel with equipment maintenance and service, keycard access and training verification for personnel seeking access to equipment, and access scheduling for equipment in core facility. (25%)
ISEC/EXP Laboratory Safety: Works closely with the with colleges, the OARS and PREF, PIs and departments to ensure laboratory and core facilities meet safety and regulatory standards; and assist with maintaining laboratory and core facility spaces assignments. Works with service technicians for scheduling of maintenance and repairs. Assists safety committees (including IBC, IACUC, IRB, etc.) and researchers as a liaison; places work requests, as needed, to maintain and support the buildings; works with external vendors as needed to maintain equipment. (25%)
ISEC/EXP Space Renovations/Modifications: Serves as a liaison between PREF and stakeholders for renovations/modifications that impact laboratory and core facility operations. Works with college faculty, staff, OARS, and PREF team, and institutional safety groups to plan the renovation for specific spaces; attends regular ISEC/EXP renovations meetings; monitors ISEC/EXP projects progress and make sure all the projects are completed in a timely manner; coordinates labs move from/to ISEC/EXP. Communicate ISEC/EXP lab renovation and construction issues with the colleges and PREF; regularly assess the space needs for ISEC and EXP faculty. (25%)
