Position Summary
The Associate Director position is part of the Undergraduate Admissions Office team reporting to the Deputy Director of Admissions and focuses on helping the University meet its goals of enrolling a talented and diverse student body. This position is responsible for the recruitment, evaluation, selection, and yield of applicants.
Duties include leading, managing, organizing, and staffing recruitment events and programs; interviewing students; providing counseling and service to students and families about the University and the college decision process; reviewing and evaluating applications to render admission decisions; and developing and maintaining relationships with school counselors and others. This position represents the University and office internally and externally.
The Associate Director is the lead admission officer responsible for developing, implementing, and analyzing, in conjunction with the Deputy Director and Executive Director, WashUâ™s strategic domestic and international recruitment plans. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for developing and implementing a college and school counselor engagement strategy. Working with the Associate Director for Diversity Access Recruitment, the incumbent will collaborate on CBO counselor outreach and programming. The Associate Director for recruitment also oversees on and off-campus counselor programs such as for the Counselor Advisory Board and working with the Director of Marketing and Communication on a college and school counselor communication strategy.
The Associate Director is responsible for initiating and fulfilling new ideas and supervising staff members to implement plans and programs. The role directly supervises staff members in their work to meet University goals and is responsible for the performance of assigned staff. This position also guides and indirectly manages staff members working on projects related to the Associate Directorâ™s areas.
Strong professional judgment, initiative, flexibility, and a collaborative mindset are essential.
Job Description
The position will be located in an open office environment. As conditions merit, this position may be required to work remotely. Travel and attendance at many events on and off campus is necessary, which may include international travel. Travel expectation is 6-8 weeks per year. Must transport recruitment materials to high school visits, college fairs, and group meetings. Work outside of normal business hours is necessary throughout the year. Position requires heavy use of the computer including an electronic application reading system in the office and at home. Ability to lift/move up to 20 lbs.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Project/Program Management
Serve as the lead admissions officer in developing, implementing, and analyzing WashU undergraduate recruitment strategy.
- Responsible for interfacing with the Admission & Aid leadership and management teams to ensure recruitment strategy aligns with enrollment goals.
- Responsible for the development of WashUâ™s international recruitment strategy to diversify WashUâ™s international student enrollment.
- Guide admission officers to ensure the alignment of territory recruitment activities with the overall recruitment strategy.
- Oversee the analysis of recruitment efforts and ensure territory management reports are completed and accessible.
- Maintain recruitment budget as set by the department.
Responsible for developing and implementing a college and school counselor engagement strategy.
- Oversee the development of counselor on and off-campus programs.
- Manage the counselor advisory board.
- Work in conjunction with marketing and communication to develop counselor communications.

Staff Management and Supervision
- Supervise assigned staff, including providing coaching, feedback, and performance evaluation.
- Provide management and oversight for staff membersâ™ work performance, including routine work, special projects and programs, and compliance with office and University procedures.
- Directly and indirectly lead staff members to execute projects and programs related to assigned area(s).
- Collaborate with colleagues, supervisor, and departmental leadership (as needed) to provide training and management to staff broadly on topics related to projects/programs.
Recruitment Management
- Manage recruitment territory that involves travel and interactions with students, parents, and counselors at high school visits, college fairs, panels, and other college recruitment activities.
- Provide expert admissions advice to prospective students and families.
- Conduct workshops on college admissions.
- Work closely with high school counselors and Community Based Organizations (CBOs) to develop strong relationships for the University.
- Excellent communication skills and knowledge about the University and admissions is critical.
- Must maintain a professional attitude at all times as a representative of the University.
Application Evaluation and Selection Process
- Review and evaluate applications and lead committee teams to make admissions recommendations and decisions aligned with institutional goals.
- Confidentiality and thoughtful consideration of the applicants are a must.
- Must have the ability to work independently following admissions guidelines.
- Lead and participate in high level strategic discussions and decision-making processes.
- Keep pace with reading expectations; and meet all deadlines throughout the reading season.
- Keep staff on track while maintaining volume and quality of own work.

Service
- Conduct information sessions about the University and Admissions for prospective students and families.
- Provide customer service by answering phone calls and emails from prospective students and parents in a timely manner.
- Interview prospective students who visit campus.
- Answer questions about the University, admissions, and St. Louis.
- Work with faculty, deans, and representatives from other departments in the University to support recruitment and enrollment efforts.
- Must be able to make mature decisions and recommendations to management.

Preferred Qualifications

- Prior experience developing, implementing, and measuring strategies and programs.
- Previous presentation experience.
- Budget management experience for major projects, services and events.

Required Qualifications
- Bachelorâ™s degree in a relevant field.
- Five years of relevant work experience.

Salary Range
$53,900.00 - $92,200.00 / Annually
The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
