The mission of the Idyllwild Arts Foundation is changing lives through the transformative power of art. The Idyllwild Arts Academy provides pre-professional training in the arts and a comprehensive college preparatory curriculum to a diverse student body of gifted young artists from all over the world. The Idyllwild Arts Summer Program provides arts instruction and experiences of the highest caliber to a diverse student population of all ages and abilities. Idyllwild is a small town located at over 5,000 feet on the western slopes of California's San Jacinto Mountains. Even though it seems far from the hustle and bustle of city life, the town and campus frequently hosts music festivals, prominent speakers and artists, and community events. Also, it is only two hours by car to Los Angeles and San Diego.

OPPORTUNITY: Director of Human Resources

LOCATION: Idyllwild, CA 92549

REPORTS TO: VP, Finance

STATUS: Full Time - Exempt - 12-month

SUPERVISES: Human Resources Manager

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Human Resources will optimize relationships of faculty, staff, managers, and senior leadership; linking human resources strategies to the school's culture and objectives, Driving excellence across Idyllwild Arts through effective problem solving and communication is critical to success. This position reports to the Vice President, Finance and is a liaison to senior leadership of the foundation.

This position is a hybrid on-campus/remote position. Incumbent must be on campus two-three days each week.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Function as Human Resources strategist, change agent and implementation advisor.
• Work closely with contracted HR support team.
• Oversee Human Resources Manager.
• Develop, implement and maintain the school's personnel policies and procedures, employee handbook, personnel forms, labor law posters to ensure effective compliance with applicable employment regulations.
• Ensure all plans comply with applicable laws and statutes (HIPPA, ERISA, EDD, and IRS guidelines) including filing and distributing all necessary forms and notices.
• Provide consultations on engagement & retention of staff, faculty and leadership.
• Drives and manages performance management processes including coaching leaders and managers on tough conversations, co-creating performance improvement plans and ensuring leaders are following through with the annual process.
• Consults with management on internal movement decisions; transfers, promotions, job enhancements and ensures decisions are in line with company policy and leveling guides.
• Conduct employee relations investigations and consult with managers and legal counsel on outcomes and next steps.
• Co-facilitate training and development programs with managers and leadership.
• Delivers change management consultation to leadership.
• Consults with leadership on personnel management and organizational design challenges.

EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE

• Experience working in an independent school environment, preferably a boarding school.
• Experience with managing complex and cross-functional initiatives, processes, or projects.
• Exposure to and comfort working with a leadership team and President.
• Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 7 years of increasingly responsible human resources experience.

SKILLS / KNOWLEDGE

• Continuous improvement mindset.
• Solid and sophisticated skills in consulting, contracting, mediating, negotiating, coaching.
• Experience in compensation, recruiting, employee relations, and organizational development is required to support the organization.
• Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels in the organization and to deal with multiple priorities, functions and activities.
• A service oriented demeanor with demonstrated tact, discretion and diplomacy and an attention to detail.
• Thorough and deep knowledge of the employee life cycle.
• Experience in leading or contributing to small to medium scale re-organizations, organizational alignment, and workforce planning efforts.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

• Ability and desire to work within the Idyllwild community.
• Obtain and maintain a valid California Driver License, pass a criminal history background check as required by California Education Code Section 44237, and pass a TB test.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENTS

While performing the duties of this position an incumbent may be required to:

• Regularly remain sedentary for long periods of time in meetings and while processing information and paperwork both manually and on a computer.
• Reach with the hands and arms and use of hands to finger, type, and manipulate a computer keyboard and mouse.
• Additionally, the incumbent must be able to converse in clear English both written and orally, over a telephone and in person.
• Be able to make public presentations.
• Occasionally, incumbent may be required to lift up to 25 pounds, traverse uneven terrain and climb stairs while moving about campus, bend and stoop, conduct tours and show visitors campus facilities.
• Provide their transportation for local and remote events.
• Work hours may include evenings and weekends.
