The Duffy Laboratory at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is seeking a Research Laboratory Specialist Associate. Research in the Duffy Lab lies at the interface of evolutionary, community and disease ecology, and utilizes a combination of field, lab and theoretical studies. Most research focuses on the evolutionary and community ecology of infectious diseases, particularly in natural populations of Daphnia. Some particular foci of our recent work include eco-evolutionary dynamics, the influences of food webs on host-parasite interactions, and multihost, multiparasite interactions.
Review of applications will begin immediately. The projected start date in Ann Arbor, Michigan is June 2021.
Maintenance of host, parasite, and algal cultures, performance and continued development of specialized methods for environmental microbiology and limnology (qPCR of spores in the water column, molecular identification & analysis of symbionts found in the water column).
Field sampling of inland lakes in the Ann Arbor area and processing of samples, including counting zooplankton samples (live & preserved) via microscopy, including analyses for parasites and other symbionts.
Experimental studies on zooplankton and their parasites, including infection assays and life tables.
Work independently to analyze data (e.g., sequence data, environmental parameters, plankton dynamics) based on established objectives, as well as determination of new/next relevant objectives. Develop new approaches to analyzing data.
Primary point responsible for general lab maintenance, safety, ordering, inventory, organization, and stock solution preparation.
Supervise the day-to-day activities of temporary hourly employees and undergraduate students, in the lab, in support of ongoing experiments. Train and support MS and PhD graduate students, postdocs, and other personnel in the lab in carrying out lab protocols, troubleshooting, and development of new protocols.
Independently develop and test protocols in the lab and field. Organize and maintain all lab protocols and procedures in a publishable format on an open source platform (protocols.io, RPubs, github).
Participate in the preparation of manuscripts for publication, including literature review, analysis and graphing of data, as well as summarizing methods and results in text. Report on status of research projects at workshops and conferences (1-2 times per year).
Lead organization of fieldwork in inland lakes in the Ann Arbor area, including, as needed, instrument design and deployment. Coordination of all lab personnel involved in field sampling. Field season is in summer and fall (mid-July through mid-November) additional field sampling may be added during May and June. During field season Research Lab Specialist and Research Lab Tech would conduct field sampling at least twice per week.
Bachelors degree in a recognized field of science with 1-3 years of related experience is required. Master’s degree in biology, ecology, microbiology, or environmental science is preferred. Must possess strong organizational skills and previous experience performing research in a wet lab is required. Must work well independently as well as in a group. Demonstrated experience / willingness to supervise a team is also required.
Must have either a) experience with basic molecular and microbial techniques, such as DNA extractions, PCR, culturing (sterile technique) and/or b) experience with sampling inland lakes and identifying and culturing plankton. Candidate should be proficient at data input, manipulation, description, and visualization; preference for candidates with experience performing all data related tasks in R. Must be able to meet eligibility requirements to operate a University-owned vehicle to transport motor boat to field sampling locations (possess a valid drivers license with no more than 6 points on motor vehicle record based on Michigan Motor Vehicle Code traffic violation point system). Must be able to move equipment weighing up to 95 lbs with assistance.
This is a one year term limited position with possibility of renewal.
