PROGRAM SUMMARY: CSUMB is committed to developing programs to attract, retain, and graduate students from diverse backgrounds, and to equip those students with the skills they need for success in STEM fields. The College of Science and the Undergraduate Research Opportunities Center (UROC) have a special focus on developing key High Impact Practices in order to attract, retain, and graduate more Latinx and low-income STEM students as well as support all students during their tenure at CSUMB and prepare them as they move on to post-graduation opportunities. Through the support of a U.S. Department of Education Hispanic Serving Institution STEM Articulation grant, we have been able to focus resources on expanding the opportunities for Course-Based Research Experiences (CUREs) on our campus. We are now looking for a researcher to help us analyze several years of data and expand upon what we understand about the impact of this programming as a means to inform future instructional, curricula and program development, as well as add to the academic body of knowledge around the value of HIPs on the STEM student experience for Hispanic and Minority-Serving Institutions, such as those in the CSU system. In addition to research on CUREs and other HIPs, the other area of focus for this research position is on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on student success. In response to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, CSUMB rapidly transitioned to distance learning in Spring 2020 and most classes will remain online through July 2021. In recognition of the challenges in the abrupt transition, and in order to ensure a smoother transition to Fall 2020, the Office of Inclusive Excellence, in partnership with UROC and other survey partners, administered the 'CSUMB Student Survey: Distance Learning Experience.' The STEM Education Post-doctoral Researcher will analyze data from this survey as well as lead the development and implementation of a follow-up survey on equity issues in emergency distance learning, particularly for Latinx students, other students of color, low-income students, and students with dependents (e.g., students who are parents). The researcher will engage in specific analyses identifying barriers as well as promising practices for supporting STEM students in a distance learning environment. POSITION SUMMARY: The STEM Education Postdoctoral Researcher will report to the Assessment and Educational Research Associate, collaborate with the Office of Inclusive Excellence, and operate as part of the STEM Education Working Group to support faculty in the assessment, development and revision of key STEM curriculum and pedagogy. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following:
Promotes institutional transformation in undergraduate STEM education focused on the disproportionate impact of the pandemic and distance learning on students of color (SOC), low-income students, and students with (dis)abilities. Given this need, follow up survey objectives are to: Identify and explore the specific challenges faced by students, especially SOC, low-income students, and students with (dis)abilities, in distance learning; Identify and explore how faculty support students in distance learning; and Identify strategies to reduce challenges that disproportionately affect students of color, low-income students, and students with (dis)abilities.
Serves as an internal consultant and evaluator for STEM Course Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs), First Year Seminars (FYS) which include a research component, and select group and individual Undergraduate Research experiences.
Contributes to peer reviewed publications; and collaborating with CSUMB researchers on internally and externally funded projects in the fields of STEM Education, Education Equity, the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, and High Impact Practices for Student Success.
Conducts research, mentors undergraduate students, develops an independent research agenda, and engages with a community of researchers in STEM.
Analyzes existing data sets across programs to inform program development and student success, while both leveraging interdisciplinary collaboration and evaluating and integrating HIPs across STEM curricula to support student success
Attend workshops, conferences as deemed necessary.
Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: This position requires extensive knowledge of: higher education pedagogies, especially evidence-based learning strategies applied to teaching STEM curricula. Preference will be given to candidates with knowledge of the STEM education literature, instructional best practices and theory behind self-efficacy, resilience, study skills, goal setting, and time management. Knowledge and experience with pedagogical research methodology, data analysis and interpretation, and communication of results are also expected. Skills: Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills; and a strong personal commitment to science education. Experience in developing educational materials or curriculum and training in Human Subjects Research. Ability to: Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, and students; facilitate knowledge and skill development; listen actively; apply independent judgment and initiative to solve problems and devise creative, practical and thoughtful solutions; work independently and, collaboratively; be self-motivated; motivate others; complete tasks on time; set clear achievable goals for independent and collaborative projects; work with multiple on-going projects and collaborators simultaneously; maintain a high standard of work ethic.
Minimum Qualifications: Education and Experience Candidates should have a Ph.D. (or be ABD) in a STEM field, STEM education, education, higher education, or related social science with a focus on STEM education. Applicants with any of the following qualifications are strongly encouraged to apply: Expertise in mixed methods research Experience with educational assessment and program evaluation Experience with STEM teaching and active learning strategies Experience creating and assessing learning objectives (rubrics) Experience with curriculum development for undergraduate research Ability to communicate effectively with diverse constituents (faculty, students, and administrators) Ability to exercise discretion and sound judgement in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues Experience in team building, communication, and interpersonal skills Committed to equity-oriented collaborative research to promote student success.
Specialized Skills: Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Must have own transportation, valid drivers license and insurance. Ability to complete web-based training in defensive driving. Must continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.

Compensation and Benefits: The monthly salary range for this position is: $5,000 - $6,667. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits including medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. Corporation positions are at-will employment.
