Description
The University Police Department at West Virginia University is seeking applications for a Campus Police Officer position to advance WVU's commitment to our values of Service, Curiosity, Respect, Accountability, and Appreciation. WVU's Police Department is a 24/7 community based, progressive agency that gives officers the flexibility to do good work for all faculty, staff, students and visitors.

WVU Campus Police Officers are state certified and sworn police officers that exercise the same authority as all other law enforcement agencies under WV Law. With opportunities for advancement, ongoing training and the ability to work in specialized units, Officers are given the means to grow within the University Police Department. In order to be successful, the ideal candidate will:
  • Patrol assigned area on campus to observe persons and property to reduce and prevent criminal activities.
  • Advise public on ways to make them more secure and seeks public support for crime prevention.
  • Patrol campus, direct traffic and provide crowd control during special events such as concerts, athletic events and other similar activities which draw large crowds of people.
  • Enforce all federal, state and University laws, rules and regulations.
  • Investigate criminal complaints and both traffic and non-traffic accidents in conjunction with the Investigative Unit by collecting and preserving evidence, interviewing witnesses and interrogating suspects, searching records, and surveillance activities.
  • Testify in court or University hearing to knowledge of or actions taken in regard to matters of interest to the courts or University.
  • Watch for fire, fire hazards, safety hazards, and other dangerous or damaging situations and respond appropriately.
  • Administer first-aid to injured or sick persons and provide or arrange for necessary transportation.
  • Escort persons making cash deposits, ensuring the safety of those individuals transporting large sums of money.
  • Assist the general public by answering inquiries, providing directions and other similar general service activities.
  • Operate the communications dispatch unit.
  • Perform special protective assignments with particular persons or property.
Uniform & Equipment Provided

Work Hours : Varies (Opportunities for overtime through special details including athletic events.)


Pay Grade : 16 (starting at $18.00 for this position) WVU provides competitive wages for its employees, and takes experience and related education into consideration when determining appropriate salary.

Employees in this position are eligible for regular incremental raises in hourly rate tied to milestones in the training program.

Qualifications
  • Must meet one of the following requirements:

    • Associates degree

    • 60 college credit hours

    • 19 months criminal justice experience

    • 19 months military experience

  • Preference will be given to candidates with greater amounts of directly related civilian or military criminal justice experience
  • Selected candidate(s) must establish residency that is within one-hour response time to the WVU police station under normal driving conditions within 90 days of contingent offer before official hire date ( https://police.wvu.edu/files/d/0fadf592-cbf8-4146-8657-48638e1c1f0a/1-hour-drive-time-wvupd.pdf )
Requirements
  • Valid driver's license
  • WV Law Enforcement Certification required or transferable Law Enforcement Certification from other states.
  • Residency within one-hour response time to the WVU police station under normal driving conditions.
  • Drug testing and medical management required
  • Selected candidate(s) must successfully complete a pre-employment psychological evaluation before official hire date
  • Must be bondable upon background check
  • Physical abilities include:
    • Standing, walking, carrying and bending daily
    • Running, jumping, and climbing weekly
