Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
Logistics and Support Services (LSS) is one of six self-supported operations within the Specialty Business Services and Cultural Arts unit under the Senior Vice President for Operations and Finance. Operating under university and Board of Regents, State of Iowa, policies and guidelines, LSS specializes in university sales (Central Stores), logistics (Central Receiving and moving services), asset management (ISU Surplus), warehousing, and (effective July 1), Postal and Parcel Services. Additionally, LSS manages the Material Stores operation, which supports the mission of Facilities Planning & Management by maintaining an inventory of critical parts with long lead times.
The Director is responsible for leading the university's Logistics and Support Services operations and administering a self-supporting operating budget of approximately $2.2 million. The department typically manages approximately $15-20 million of moving inventory and over 100,000 square feet of warehouse space in three locations. Personnel responsibilities include directing 22 full-time staff and 15-20 student employees in a diverse multi-location service operation. The position makes financial and operational decisions and provides business planning and management to achieve the department's operational objectives of serving university departments in a cost-effective manner to protect and maximize the university's resources, while supporting the university's strategic plan. Responsibilities also include: evaluating and maintaining or improving customer satisfaction, monitoring operational effectiveness, and looking for opportunities for improvement in quality and services. The position serves as a member of the Specialty Business Services and Cultural Arts leadership team.
The successful candidate will possess extensive knowledge of logistics and warehousing operations, excellent written and oral communication skills, proven leadership ability, goal setting and project management skills, and the ability to promote excellent interpersonal relationships with diverse groups of customers, students, peers, and administrators. The successful candidate also will possess critical thinking and effective problem solving skills.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 8 years of related experience; OR a Master’s degree and 6 years of related experience; OR a Ph.D. or other professional degree and 3 years of related experience unless otherwise specified under supplemental required education and experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Bachelors Degree in Transportation Logistics, Business Management, or business related field.
Post-secondary coursework in business law and accounting.
Experience managing a self-supporting budget with profit and loss responsibilities.
Project management experience.
Experience directing warehousing operations.
Experience with surplus management (working with surplus equipment including determining the value of surplus items).
Experience directing logistics and storeroom operations.
Experience in higher education or the public sector.
