The AAA Lab at Stanford (aaalab.stanford.edu) works at the intersection of education, cognitive science, and computer science. We are exploring the value of novel instructional techniques and computer-based learning technologies, e.g. online games and simulations, for improving STEM learning and assessment. Our research primarily focuses on middle-school aged children in both schools and informal learning settings such as summer camps, afterschool programs, and museums. We are seeking a multifaceted research professional who can help with implementation of all aspects of our research, including developing and implementing instructional materials; interfacing regularly with teachers, parents, and students; collecting, organizing, and analyzing data; as well as designing learning technologies as part of a small research and development team. This is a full-time position for a term of one year, with possibilities for extension.
CORE DUTIES *
Help with preparation and development of learning materials (elementary and middle school science and math), as well as implementation of instruction
Communicate and interact with teachers, administrators, parents, and students in formal, as well as informal, settings on a frequent basis.
Assist in data collection, entry, organization, and analysis.
Work with research team on research study design and implementation.
Participate in user interface design cycles for new learning technologies.
Complete other tasks as needed, including library research, copying, etc.
*Other duties may be assigned.
Education and Experience: MA/MS in social, life, or physical sciences, education, or related field or BA/BS + 2 years experience.
Experience working with K-12 students, preferably in school settings or related environment, e.g. informal learning environments, such as afterschool programs.
Experience in designing and developing instructional technologies or STEM curriculum
Experience teaching or working with teachers. Experience with teacher professional development a plus.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Excellent interpersonal skills; able to work both independently and collaboratively with diverse team members.
Excellent organizational skills; able to set and adhere to timelines across multiple projects, give attention to detail, take initiative, and manage ambiguity well.
Demonstrated communication skills, both oral and written, with a wide range of audiences in both formal and informal settings
Demonstrated skill and comfort with technologies, including research tools, such as Microsoft Excel, R, or SPSS.
Experience with research study design, and data analysis a plus.
Certificates and Licenses:
Drivers license and own transportation preferred, to be able to travel to Bay Area schools (Peninsula & South Bay).
Human subjects research (CITI) training to be completed upon hiring
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS *
Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, write by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
Be able to teach classes of students (standing, bending, moving around the classroom) for a full school day.
May be required to work non-standard, extended or weekend hours in support of research work.
Interpersonal Skills: Demonstrates the ability to work well with Stanford colleagues, teachers and other school personnel, and clients and with external organizations.
