The Volunteer Engagement team is responsible for the development and execution of all on-going, multi-engagement, and single-day volunteer service projects that engage Chicagoans as agents of change. The team coordinates all components of these volunteer programs, which vary in size from 10 to more than 1,000 volunteers, from project development and logistics to the education, empowerment and engagement of volunteers at the project. In a city as divided as Chicago, it is essential to offer a new kind of volunteer experience, impact volunteering, where volunteers work alongside community members to understand local issues, work collaboratively to address those issues, and build trust and connection along the way. Through the Volunteer Engagement team, Chicago Cares:
Connects volunteers to community-led and collective impact change efforts
Breaks down barriers and bridges the gaps facing our communities
Educates and inspires volunteers to commit to serve in new and different ways
The Coordinator will be responsible for the development, management and leadership of innovative, on-going, multi-engagement, large-scale one-day and hybrid volunteer engagement models that meet the needs of Chicago Cares, as well as those of our community, non-profit, corporate and volunteer partners.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
Projects: Manage a blended portfolio of one-time and ongoing volunteer engagement projects, provide exceptional logistics for each kind of project, and execute site and scoping visits to develop and evaluate partner relationships, including sourcing prospective projects, establishing partnerships and setting expectations of community partners.
Ensure high-quality, within budget project execution for one day events and on-going programs, inclusive of detailed project descriptions, work scopes, leadership resources, supply lists, transportation, supply delivery, catering, and equipment logistics.
Provide leadership for projects (including completing project prep, supply acquisition, day of event management and project wrap-up) for staff-led projects and assume leadership of on-going projects, should a Chicago Cares volunteer leader not be available
Develop new project opportunities in an assigned issue area or geography that deepen volunteer engagement, empowerment and education and project impact consistent with the Community Investment Strategy (CIS) and collaboratively with CIS counterparts.
Community Partner Relationship Management: Manage a portfolio of community partners, consistent with the Community Investment Strategy (CIS), issue area and collective impact strategies for multi-faceted engagement.
Project Evaluation: Conduct program/project evaluation processes and leader evaluation processes.
Leader Relationship Management: Manage a portfolio of program leaders, consistent with issue area and collective impact strategies for multi-faceted engagement, recruiting, resourcing, managing, evaluating, and coaching volunteer leaders for ongoing and one-day programs.
New Model Implementation: As budget, opportunity and strategy allow for, develop, with program leadership, new program models that develop deeper issue area understanding or advance strategic objectives.
Track data related to volunteer attendance, project impact stats, and survey results and evaluate programs within the assigned portfolio, inclusive of managing grant requirements around budget, impact and evaluation metrics.

Participate in cross-departmental committees and task forces as appropriate
Participate in and provide support and stewardship of fundraising activities
Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent related experience; national service or volunteer project development experience a plus; especially AmeriCorps
Demonstrated commitment to service, civic engagement and/or social justice
Excellent project management skills, including ability to manage multiple assignments with ability to prioritize and meet deadlines
Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills with ability to make effective oral presentations to large and small groups
Strong commitment to customer service principles and practices
Ability to maintain composure, flexibility, and enthusiasm when working with a variety of personalities
Ability to work beyond traditional working hours and schedules
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and engage in physical labor associated with loading, unloading and moving project supplies
Ability to adjust to various physical and environmental conditions as the position may require including computer work, sitting or standing for long periods of time, etc.
Ability to drive a cargo van or box truck for project supply deliveries
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint and other desktop publishing tools. Experience with CRM databases (e.g., Salesforce) a plus.
Regular, reliable access to transportation to travel to and from project sites throughout the Chicagoland area. Some project sites may not be easily accessible via public transit.
