This is a unique opportunity to engage in cutting edge research while working with leaders in the field of stem cell biology and diabetes. The research assistant will be responsible for supporting in vivo and in vitro studies designed to find novel regulators of beta cell maturation and insulin secretion. Under the specific direction of senior research staff in the Melton Lab, the research assistant will support experiments focused on studying the unique metabolism of primary human and mouse beta cells, as well as cells derived from in vitro differentiation of stem cells towards pancreatic beta cells. Research methods used include: islet preparations, blood collection, glucose tolerance testing (GTT), glucose stimulated insulin secretion (GSIS), immunohistochemistry, FACS and ELISA. Working within specific guidelines, the Research Assistants will be expected to independently collect and record experimental data and update written protocols and methods based on findings. Other job duties may include laboratory maintenance (including cleaning equipment), monitoring/ordering supplies, and keeping inventory of laboratory samples.
This is a one year grant funded term position with the possibility of extension based on satisfactory performance and continued availability of funding.

Coursework/training in biology or closely related field is required.
Bachelor's degree in biology or closely related field is strongly preferred as is two years' related work experience in a biological research laboratory. Skills and experience handling mice and performing mouse studies involving injections, blood collection and/or surgeries is strongly preferred. Organizational skills and excellent attention to detail are essential components for this position. Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment, strong communication skills, and computer experience are required. Two year commitment is preferred.
