Under nominal direction, individual performs a variety of basic and general laboratory research and clerical tasks related to fluorescence imaging of dynamic cellular processes in neurons, cardiac cells, and various microorganisms. May perform tasks related to the research project independently, within broad guidelines and subject to periodic review by supervisor or other research staff.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to: (1) basic DNA cloning, protein expression, genotyping, and maintenance of primary and stable tissue culture cell lines, under the guidance of postdocs and/or graduate students if needed; (2) experiments and documentation related to optimizing laboratory protocols; (3) training and orientation of new lab members; (4) assisting the Principal Investigator in maintaining compliance with laser, microbiological, chemical, and IACUC regulations; (5) coordinating shipments of biological samples to scientific collaborators; (6) maintenance work in the wet lab, including cleaning glassware, autoclaving, purchasing general laboratory supplies and reagents, etc. and (7) attendance/participation in laboratory meetings. If the individual is interested and time allows, may perform specific scientific projects. Other duties as required.
May be required to lift, move and transport related research equipment. May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials. May be required to work with and handle animals.
This is a one-year term position with a possibility of renewal.

College background in Biochemistry, Chemistry, Neuroscience, Molecular and Cell Biology, or related discipline required.
Bachelor's degree preferred. Two or more years of experience in related laboratory research preferred. Must be able to work independently and as part of a team, be self-motivated, and be comfortable interacting with researchers from diverse backgrounds. Should have excellent communication skills. Familiarity with common wet-lab and optical instrumentation and Microsoft Office preferred.
