The iPS Core Facility at Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) provides cell derivation, genome editing and training services to researchers and innovators across the biomedical field. A position is open for a research assistant with a background in cell culture to help expand our team.
Working closely with a senior core facility member, the successful candidate will culture human pluripotent stem cells and use them to generate insulin-producing pancreatic beta cells to meet the needs of investigators in the local and global research community. The assistant will assess the quality and function of cells using techniques such as immunofluorescent staining, flow cytometry and ELISA, and may assist in the optimization of workflows and protocols.
This position offers the opportunity to work in a collaborative, cutting-edge core facility environment and is ideal for a research assistant with interest in stem cell and regenerative biology, organoid methods and/or the biology of diabetes.
Performs mammalian cell culture using aseptic technique;
Performs laboratory assays including immunofluorescent staining, flow cytometry and ELISA;
Prepares solutions and media;
Collects, organizes and reports project data, primarily using Microsoft Excel, Word and PowerPoint;
As a member of a project team, may assist in the design of laboratory workflows, techniques, and protocols;
May occasionally instruct others in laboratory techniques;
Performs related laboratory maintenance such as maintaining and cleaning equipment, monitoring inventory and ordering supplies.
This is a one year grant funded term position.
May be required to lift, move and transport related laboratory equipment.
May be required to work with a variety of hazardous materials. May be required to work with and handle animals.

College background or equivalent work experience in cellular and molecular biology is required.
Bachelor's degree in biology or related field is strongly preferred.
Previous experience with cell cultures and sterile laboratory technique is preferred. Good organizational skills and excellent attention to detail and self-motivated rigorare essential components of this position. Ability to work in a collaborative, team-oriented environment. Some weekend flexibility will be required. Computer experience is desirable.
