POSTDOCTORAL ASSOCIATE, Plasma Science and Fusion Center, to join a small group of researchers on the MIT-led Phase Contrast Imaging (PCI) diagnostic to study plasma turbulence on the Wendelstein 7-X stellarator in Greifswald, Germany. Wendelstein 7-X is the world's newest and most modern superconducting stellarator that commenced operation at the end of 2015. After initial plasma operation the facility has been upgraded with an inertially-cooled divertor unit and the next phase of experimental plasma operation is scheduled to begin in September of 2017. The PCI diagnostic is one of a large suite of new diagnostics that have been installed in the current year and will commence initial shakedown and data collection in fall 2017 and continue through 2018, with a break in the spring of 2018. The objective of this diagnostic is to provide direct measurements of turbulent density fluctuations so that a better understanding of the role of turbulence in overall energy and particle transport is gained and to test current scaling laws of energy and particle confinement. Will collaborate with other MIT and W7-X scientists and learn to operate and maintain the PCI diagnostic and develop data analysis codes to interpret data. In year two, will become familiar with state-of-the-art turbulence codes operating on supercomputers and develop synthetic diagnostic methods to interpret the experimental results at a deeper level of understanding of transport physics.
REQUIRED: Ph.D. in plasma physics or closely related field, solid background in experimental physics research, and direct experience with optics and lasers. Experience in advanced programming and the operation of sophisticated numerical codes and/or a desire to learn is an asset. Job #15130
The position requires a permanent presence at the Max Planck Institut fr Plasmaphysik located in Greifswald, Germany, with occasional visits to MIT. The ability to apply for a German residence visa for non-EU researchers is necessary.
The appointment is initially for one year, but may be extended for a second year depending on the availability of funds. The position is available starting any time from September and will remain open until filled.
