University Advancement, Regional Advancement, has an outstanding opportunity for an Associate Director for Advancement.
The Associate Director for Advancement will work with the Regional Advancement team, academic leaders, volunteers and other advancement staff to identify, cultivates, and solicits major gift prospects for gifts in support of the University of Washington. The Associate Director for Advancement will have assigned responsibility for oversight and coordination of fundraising in one or more regions, and will be expected to work closely with deans and other academic leaders.
Duties and Responsibilities
Frontline Fundraising The Associate Director will focus particularly on identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding major gift prospects and donors, including primarily individuals as well as some corporation and foundation prospects, as appropriate. Provide strategic leadership to deans, faculty and administrators in designing and implementing advancement programs needed to sustain major gift support. Coordinate the participation of administrators, academic leaders, volunteers and advancement staff in major gift fundraising activities.
Manage a portfolio of major gift prospects. Develop and implement a solicitation strategy for each assigned major gift prospect. Visit with donors and prospective donors in assigned region(s) as necessary to cultivate and solicit major gifts. Prepare written proposals, informational materials, endowment agreements, gift illustrations and other materials needed to secure major gifts. Participate cooperatively in the University's prospect management and tracking system.
In consultation with the Senior Director for Regional Advancement, establish goals, objectives and strategies for major gift fundraising. Participate in assessing progress toward goals.
Develop and manage a budget for outreach, travel and cultivation activities in assigned region(s).
Coordinate donor visits and events with university representatives, including President, deans, directors, faculty and students, when appropriate. Facilitate and participate in donor visits with University representatives. Prepare donor briefings and cultivation strategies.
Lead advancement of regional events and programs, often in partnership with other campus units including UW Alumni Association and schools and colleges, designed to engage donors and potential donors in the University. Create follow up plans for prospective donors identified through these events.
Program Development and Management Participate in the advancement of (i) policies and procedures relating to the Regional Advancement program, (ii) marketing materials for the major gift effort, and (iii) major gift cultivation and stewardship activities and events.
Plan, assign and review the work of support staff.
Submit regular activity reports to the Senior Director for Regional Advancement.
Relationship Management Serve as liaison between schools/colleges/units and programs and prospective donors. Become familiar with individual unit programs, priorities and goals in order to represent them to donors and prospective donors.
Work cooperatively and in partnership with staff in the Planned Giving, Principal Giving, Annual Giving, Corporate and Foundation Relations, and with school/college/program Directors of Advancement and their staff members in identifying and cultivating donors, as well as preparing solicitation strategies for assigned prospects.
Other duties as assigned.

Requirements Bachelor's degree and five years' experience progressively responsible experience in institutional development/advancement, with an emphasis on cultivating and soliciting major gifts. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree. Demonstrated strong computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint for correspondence, special reports, spreadsheets, databases, forms, etc.
Desired Qualifications Fundraising experience in a higher education setting, an advanced degree in a relevant field (e.g., law, business, etc.) and general knowledge of corporate and foundation fundraising and gift planning vehicles.
Knowledge of alumni relations/development/advancement principles.
Knowledge of UW Advancement policies and procedures, including use of the development database software ADVANCE.
Conditions of Employment Cubicle/Open workspace environment which may result in additional or higher levels of noise and visual distractions. Ability to work evening and weekend hours, as necessary, on short or limited notice. Must have regular and reliable transportation for local travel and willing to travel when necessary. Frequent travel expected. A valid Washington State driver's license is required to operate the UW Alumni Association Van. Candidate selected must have personal transportation and be willing to travel when necessary. Ability to lift /move 20 pounds regularly and up to 40 pounds occasionally for event setup and tear down. During Events (from setup to tear down) or on Event days: Ability to stand 4 or more hours continuously. Ability to walk 4 or more hours continuously. Ability Standing: duration of 4+ hours for events Ability to work greater than a 10 hour day
