General Description: The Corporate Counsel position is primarily responsible for drafting and negotiating lease agreements and other real estate transactional documents for a publicly-traded company operating retail stores throughout the Western United States. The position will be based in the Company’s headquarters in the metro Los Angeles area. In addition to handling lease negotiations, the position will be responsible for managing legal matters involving the Company’s real estate, providing strategic legal advice, and supporting the Company’s Legal team, Real Estate team and other departments in a variety of matters.
Primary Responsibilities: •Draft and negotiate real estate transactional documents—predominantly retail leases and lease amendments, but also including various other real estate documents such SNDAs, estoppels, office leases, warehouse leases, assignments, subleases, and easements. •Support the Company’s Real Estate department and existing attorneys in managing all legal aspects of the Company’s real estate matters, including preparing communications with third parties, handling and resolving real estate disputes, exercising extension options, interpreting contractual provisions and providing legal advice. •In addition to real estate matters, candidates should also be prepared to handle other transactional matters, including negotiating a wide variety of business contracts. •As appropriate, the position will provide support to other matters handled by the Company’s cross-functional Legal team.
Qualifications: •Approximately 5 years of legal experience at a top law firm as a real estate transactional attorney with significant retail leasing experience. •Juris Doctorate and membership in good standing with the California State Bar. •Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to interact with executive management. •High attention to detail. •Ability to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously. •Ability to think strategically. •Ability to demonstrate sound legal and business judgment. •Desire to learn the Company’s substantive business. •Ability and willingness to handle various types of matters, even if outside of comfort zone or primary area of responsibility.
